Former Additional Secretary (Home) in Jammu and Kashmir and former Vice Chancelor Aligarh Muslim University Mehmood Ur Rahman passed away on Friday.
He hailed from Lucknow and had a long association with kashmir politically, administratively and academically.


During Hazratbal siege he and Wajahat Habibulla were negotiators. While onway back from his Hazratbal they were hit with an army vehicle outside UNMOGIP office in Sonwar Srinagar.

He became Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in 1995. A Kashmir student of the varsity at that time told Kashmir Life that he was greeted with pro Kashmir graffiti in AMU campus. It was turbulent times in AMU .

Off late he was associated with BJP.  There were reports that he might get governorship.
He was very instrumental in getting many Kashmiris admitted in AMU campus as those days worried parents in Kashmir would send their wards to AMU to keep them away from militancy.
